For Johnny Wen, modeling was never part of the plan. Growing up in a traditional Chinese household, the Maryland-based model describes himself as a studious kid who spent more time focused on academics and sports than appearances. Confidence did not come naturally. In fact, he spent much of his early life feeling insecure about how he looked.

“I was always studying,” Johnny says. “I was never that confident growing up.”

Originally from Los Angeles, Wen moved to the DMV area in 2018 for college. It was there that something began to change. He started taking better care of himself, developing healthier habits, spending more time in the gym, and building a stronger sense of confidence. What began as self-improvement eventually opened the door to an opportunity he had never seriously considered before. People kept asking the same question: Have you ever thought about modeling?

At first, the idea felt unrealistic. Modeling seemed distant and unattainable. Still, curiosity pushed him to explore it. Like many aspiring models, his first experience was not glamorous. An early open-call opportunity turned out to be little more than an expensive pay-to-play scheme.

For many people, that would have been enough to quit. Instead, Johnny kept going.

In 2023, he discovered an open casting call for DC Fashion Week and decided to take a chance on himself. That decision changed everything. Although he never ended up walking that particular season, the opportunity led him to his first official runway show during New York Fashion Week. From there, momentum started building.

Johnny immersed himself in the fashion community, connecting with designers, casting directors, photographers, and fellow creatives. He became known primarily as a runway model while steadily expanding into editorial work. Over the last two and a half years, he has been signed by Kingsley Model Agency in Washington, D.C., and Fetch Model Management in New York, and has appeared in multiple magazine publications and campaigns.

The lesson he carries with him is to always show up for himself and the work. Whether working alongside designer Deontre of Hoodlvm or collaborating on editorial shoots with photographers and creative teams, Johnny believes consistency matters just as much as talent. Relationships are built through reliability and trust.

But unlike the glamorous image many people associate with modeling, Johnny’s reality is far more balanced.

Today, he works as a banker while continuing to pursue modeling, content creation, and brand partnerships on the side. It is a demanding schedule, but one he embraces because he knows what he is building toward.

“Modeling is definitely a dream,” he says. “I would love for it to be my full-time career one day.” Until then, he continues to juggle both worlds with discipline and ambition.

His journey has not been without challenges. Body image struggles, self-doubt, long hours, and the pressure of comparison all exist within the industry. To stay grounded, Johnny focuses on routines, fitness, healthy habits, and occasionally stepping away from social media to reconnect with himself.

His biggest advice is the same mindset that got him here in the first place. “Don’t let anybody stop you,” he says. “As long as you work hard for it, you’ll get it.”

For Johnny Wen, every opportunity began with the decision to take the shot. And judging by the path he has already built, he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.
